Storm-Damaged Sliding Door? What to Document

5 Steps · 5 min read ·

Before you file a claim for a storm-damaged sliding door, document the damage and get a written assessment, and do both before anything is repaired or replaced. Photos, dates and a contractor report are what adjusters ask for.

The storm passes. The paperwork does not. Lovely.

[Puts the clipboard down.] Here are the five things to document, in order. This is general guidance. Your policy decides what is covered, so check it with your insurer.

1

Photograph everything before you touch it

Take photos of the whole door first, then close-ups of the glass, the frame, the track and the handle. Shoot from inside and outside.

Take wide shots that show the door in the room, too. An adjuster wants context, not just a crack.

2

Write down dates and what happened

Note the date of the storm, when you found the damage, and what you did next. Keep it factual. Short notes beat a long story.

If anything moved, broke further or leaked afterward, add that with the date.

3

Get a written assessment from a contractor

A written assessment says what failed and why. That is more useful than your photos alone, because it comes from someone who works on these doors.

Ask for it before any repair starts. Once the old glass or frame is gone, nobody can inspect it.

4

Separate storm damage from wear

A good report is honest about both. Shattered glass and a bent frame point to impact. Corroded rollers and a worn track point to age.

Do not blur the two together. A clear split makes the report easier to trust.

5

Keep every receipt

Hold on to invoices, receipts and any written estimates, including the ones for work you did not go ahead with.

Emergency board-up is usually its own job, handled separately from the repair. Keep its paperwork in the same folder.

Photos, dates, a written assessment, a clean split between storm and wear, and your receipts. That is the whole list. None of it guarantees an outcome, but it gives your claim something solid to stand on.
