Sliding Door Will Not Lock? Diagnose and Fix It

5 Causes · 5 min read ·

Close-up of a black sliding door handle and latch on the edge of a sliding glass door

A sliding door that will not lock is usually out of alignment, not broken. The door has shifted, so the latch no longer meets the strike plate. Most fixes are a same-day job, and a typical repair runs $150 to $500.

You turn the lock. It spins. Nothing catches. Lovely.

[Puts the lock down.] Here are the five causes, in the order we see them, plus how to secure the door tonight.

1

Misaligned door, the most common cause

The latch is fine. The door has settled a little, and it no longer lines up with the strike plate. The lock turns freely and grabs nothing.

Test it. Close the door and look at the gap between the latch and the plate. If the latch sits above or below the opening, the door is out of position. Lift the handle slightly while you close it. If it catches then, the door is riding low on worn rollers.

2

Bent or shifted strike plate

The strike plate is the metal piece on the frame that the latch hooks into. A hard slam or a kid hanging off the handle can bend it.

Look for a curled edge or scrape marks. A plate that is only loose can be tightened. A bent one needs to be reset or replaced.

3

Worn or broken latch

Latches wear from years of use and salt air. The hook rounds off and stops biting. Sometimes the spring inside fails and the hook will not stay out.

If the handle feels loose or the hook does not move when you turn the lock, the latch is the problem. Swap it. Do not keep forcing it.

4

Worn cylinder or lock mechanism

If a key sticks or the lock turns with no resistance, the cylinder inside is worn. A quick spray of dry lubricant is fine for a stiff lock. Skip the heavy oil, it collects grit.

A cylinder that spins loose is done. It needs to be replaced.

5

Securing the door while you wait

A door that will not lock is a security problem tonight, not next week. Here are temporary fixes.

Cut a wooden dowel or broom handle to fit the bottom track behind the door. It blocks the panel from sliding open. A track bar from a hardware store does the same job. Neither replaces a working lock, but both buy you time.

Check the gap, the plate and the latch. That tells you which of the five you have. If the door is out of position, the fix is usually new rollers or a reset in the opening, not a new lock.
